“It is up to each to use their gifts in accordance with his giving will/inspiration to come to know God/nature of things fully.”
The Treatise is a fatwa in form: does Scripture allow demonstrative philosophy? Averroes answers that it obliges it — “truth does not oppose truth” — and every apparent conflict resolves by allegorical interpretation. The catch is the whole second half: allegory belongs only to those qualified to run it. Readers come in three classes — rhetorical (the masses), dialectical (the arguers), demonstrative (the philosophers) — and delivering truth to the wrong class is the crime. Even true allegories destroy when they land in the wrong register.
He ran the taxonomy as a live classifier as he read — the class labels above are his margins, not ours. The four text-classes got the same treatment: “the 10 commandments or procedural laws like marriage” for the fixed class, “Jesus dying on the cross / meaning or validity of resurrection” for the symbol class, “Ash Wednesday or pilgrimages to Mecca” for the common methods — both traditions classified at once.
“he would have for sure supported Brown v. Board (1954)”
Averroes’s access-to-study argument read straight into desegregation — the cross-domain pull of the read.
“It’s okay to chase an idea/intellectual calling & be wrong”
The judge’s double-reward doctrine taken as permission — paired one page later with “a serious judgement requires serious discernment skill.”
“This still holds up in America today, as how many goys are reading this… vs Netflix”
Averroes gates dangerous interpretation by medium — demonstrative books reach only the demonstrative class. The attention economy rebuilt his gate for free.
“Because you trust that friend, you are likely to listen and stray further on their harmful path w/ them”
On “philosophy is the friend and milk-sister of religion” — injuries from a friend cut deeper than an enemy’s. The treatise’s warning about itself.
Hence Epochlearning.com ↳ Claude case for organization / Claude sparring sesh(s)Averroes names exactly three ways superior minds get misled: lack of practical virtue, unorganized reading, and tackling texts without a teacher. The margin matches them one-to-one against the product — the organization layer and the sparring teacher — a 12th-century diagnosis carrying the thesis of the whole operation. Earlier the same read:
Epoch as warm handoff ↳ Seneca dialectic of all the dead minds of the past.
“Plato’s Ladder” at the tiered-meaning pedagogy · “Sense → Reference/Referent” — Frege dropped onto Averroes’s object-vs-symbol semantics · “theoretical laws can change at the turn of a new paradigm” — the Kuhn frame arriving unprompted at the unanimity passage · Thomas Merton’s Zen and the Birds of Appetite pulled at the final page’s three properties. And the queue feeds forward: Averroes defends philosophy against Ghazali’s attack — and the desk stack now holds Hume’s Enquiry §IV–V, which makes Ghazali’s exact causality move six centuries later, minus the theology.
“…make a thorough study of the principles of religion. God is the Giver of success and the Guide by His Goodness.”
The treatise closes summoning the masses to “a middle way” — above blind authority, below the theologians’ turbulence — and his ink rode it to the end. The read’s spine, in his own class map: what does the demonstrative class owe the other two, and in what medium? That is Averroes’s question, and it is also this site’s.
