Realistic art used art to conceal art; Modernism uses art to call attention to art — the medium made visible from inside the work.Clement Greenberg · Modernist Painting · 1960 · in Modern Art and Modernism, pp. 6–10

Greenberg’s case: each art becomes Modernist by turning its own limitations — for painting, the flat surface, the shape of the support, the properties of pigment — from things to hide into the very things it declares. Self-criticism is the method, flatness is the one condition unique to painting, and the whole move is continuity, not rupture: Modernism is the tradition made conscious of itself, not a break from it. The margins caught it fast — a tag for “the Jist,” braces down the Manet-to-Cézanne turn, a star tying greatness to self-set limits — and sealed the essay in one line about software. A short, dense read: started 4:28 P.M., done 4:43 P.M., 09.19.26.

The lines he pulled

“Modernist painting has come to regard these same limitations — the flat surface, the shape of the support, the properties of pigment — as positive factors that are to be acknowledged openly.”

p.6 · underlined · his (A): “Breaking the 4th wall from within the house”

“one sees a Modernist painting as a picture first … Modernism imposes it as the only and necessary way, and Modernism’s success in doing so is a success of self-criticism.”

p.7 · his (B): “‘The Jist’”

“the limiting conditions of art have to be made altogether human limits.”

p.8 · bracketed · the deliberate creation of limits Modernism harps on

“Art is, among many other things, continuity. Without the past of art … such a thing as Modernist art would be impossible.”

p.10 · underlined · the anchor under his one-sentence seal

The read, page by page

The scan is a landscape two-column book; the margins run footnote-style, a lettered tag in the body paired to the note carrying the same letter. Every quoted margin is his, verbatim.

pp.6–7
  1. (A)“Breaking the 4th wall from within the house” · on Modernism using art to call attention to art, the medium’s limitations acknowledged openly.
  2. │Braces down two turns · the Manet-to-Cézanne passage, and the Old Masters preserving the integrity of the picture plane while the Modernists reverse the contradiction’s terms. “flatness” underlined.
  3. (B)“‘The Jist’” · on seeing a Modernist painting as a picture first — the move he marks as the core of the argument.
pp.8–9
  1. □A bracket + strike · the Paleolithic-image-vs-picture passage: making pictures means the deliberate choice and creation of limits.
  2. (B)“…abstract art. At first could be…” · the note’s tail runs into the landscape gutter and is edge-cut — flagged in the decode, not guessed.
p.10
  1. ☆“The reason for cred were masters working within [☆] those self set limits” · a star linking “working within” to “those self set limits,” on the past giving right work wrong reasons — greatness as mastery inside chosen constraints.
  2. ✦Underline + strike · “Nothing could be further from the authentic art of our time than the idea of a rupture of continuity.”
  3. ✦The one-sentence seal, in his quotation marks, dated · quoted below. Right column (a different essay, Popper) carries no ink.

Structure is scaffold; every quoted margin is his, verbatim, spelling as inked (“Jist,” “cred,” “self set limits”). Letters are his per-page location pointers. One note edge-cut at the gutter is named as edge-cut, not smoothed.
