We wrote this book to help you make your ideas stick. By “stick,” we mean that your ideas are understood and remembered, and have a lasting impact—they change your audience’s opinions or behavior.Chip Heath & Dan Heath · Made to Stick · Random House · the passage he tagged “The Jist” on p.8 · title page + pp.4–260, three photo drops

The stickiness book, read with the whole toolbox out: highlighter, pen, per-page letter tags, and the operator marks. He stamped the title page in ink, “Started 09/11 @ 4:36 p.m.”, tagged the Jist at p.8, and by p.100 was rebuilding the SUCCESs recipe in his own vocabulary: “core, foresighted, concrete, simple= STicky.” The margins run two lanes at once. One lane files the book into his shelf, complementing the S7 canon, checking off The Tipping Point, banking anti-buzzword fodder for his own pen engine. The other lane drafts on the page: a five-rung question ladder for his own up-funnel, a two-step naming law, a rewrite of one of the book’s own Clinic messages in five lettered moves, and a standing command over the Velcro pages, “We want to light up the map w/hooks(!)”. The photographed run ends at p.260 with no closing stamp in frame.

The lines he wrote

His own margin words, verbatim, spelling as inked. The letters are his per-page location tags; the (!) and (?) are his operator marks, do-this and answer-this.

“We want to light up the map w/hooks(!)”

p.111 · over the Velcro hooks-and-loops pages, beside “most useful new info in book thus far (A)” · the (!) is his do-this mark

“Define Scope: Landscape (A) & Consecrate importance w/ a name (B)”

p.103 · his two-step naming law, pulled from the Mount Hamilton Wilderness pages

“Lead w/ the simplest schema that gets most bang for your buck (B)”

p.55 · the pomelo pages compressed to one instruction

“(A) So far, recipe is core, foresighted, concrete, simple= STicky”

p.100 · the SUCCESs acronym rebuilt mid-read in his own labels

“Statistic + metaphor = the Connective tie for an audience (B)”

p.145 · his formula for the whole human-scale section

“the CTA is audience simulation (A)”

p.213 · at “stories are like flight simulators for the brain”

“Depth & Scarcity of ideas having same direction (A)”

p.243 · at the Stanford speech study, one point over ten

“(A) Rubric to add to Payden ... voice Corpus Skill (A)”

p.247 · beside the book’s five-question audience checklist · a build instruction written straight into the margin

The ladder he drew

On p.87, where the Heaths turn gap theory into a fund-raising teaser, he drew his own version down the margin: a rung of questions a prospect is already carrying, arrows pointing up-funnel. His ink, verbatim, top to bottom as written; the caret insert (“^from”) is his.

GAP · e.g.
“why is it so hard to get my website live?”
↑
Blockers
↑
pricing
↑
how to buy
↑
why buy ^from me
p.87 · his margin, beside “the goal is not to summarize; it’s to make you care about knowing something, and then to tell you what you want to know”

Two pages earlier he had already named the move, his ink with his own quote marks: “‘ Planting the seed’ here (B)” at p.85’s open-gaps-before-you-close-them. And the hooks command on p.111 is this ladder’s design brief: every rung a hook.

The read, chapter by chapter

Every phrase in quotes is his, verbatim, spelling as inked. Letters (A)(B)(C) are his per-page sequence, not a ranking. Where the decode could not resolve a word it ships flagged, never guessed.

  6. pp.38–39“MY new 1 (A)” · “MY Rewrite (A)–(E)” · he ran the sun-exposure Clinic for real, in ink: promoted the buried harm statement to the lead and re-sequenced the print’s five paragraphs with his own letters.
  7. p.43“Stuff USA provides vs boots on ground (A)” · the Daily Record’s local-focus lesson compressed to one contrast pair.
  8. p.46“Sensei (A)” · circled beside “simple messages are core and compact.” One word, naming the product whose whole medium is proverb-length.

unexpected
  1. p.64“Trigger/setup (A)” · “‘Twist’ (B)” · “↳ pun (C)” · the flight-safety opener dissected into a two-beat formula, then the question under it: “(D) Hmmm, How for a hero though (?) (D)”.
  2. p.67“(A) Hopefully, prebuilt stuff fights anti-sales[-]people schema (A)” · “e.g. some kind of stat[s] on epochseo.com about website myths (B)” · the guessing-machines pages read as a plan: break the prospect’s prediction of a pitch by handing them a finished thing.
  3. p.70“(A) suprise w/o the explanatory variable” · HENSION and BARDLE in stats vocabulary: surprise alone is noise, insight is the variable that explains it.
  4. after p.71“(A) for epochseo.com { (1) simple, fast, prebuilt/ yours [GARBLE: last word reads “door”] (2) I work on blind faith (3) ↑ Transparency, Quality no added cost” · the book’s three-step process for uncommon sense, run on his own offer in a brace of numbered lines. Page number not visible in frame, flagged not assumed.

  6. p.84“✽ (A) If your will needs that info especially (A)” · gap theory gated on need: the itch bites hardest when the audience’s live intent depends on the missing piece.
  7. p.89“Agreed; same w/ goal setting [GARBLE: fore-edge word unresolved] (A)” · public commitment before the reveal, matched to his own goal-setting practice; and the open question next to it: “↳ I don’t know how you do this commercially/ more substa[GARBLE] [GARBLE] (B)”, left as asked.

  10. p.96“Be forward seeking still somewhat Past driven (A)” · the pocketable radio and the man on the moon, compressed to one axis: the new glimpse anchored in the old schema.
pp.99–121
concrete
  1. p.99“(A) All anti-Pen engine fodder(/ Principles (A)” · the buzzword salad, “customer-oriented visionary paradigm” and kin, banked as a ban-list feed for his own voice pipeline.
  2. p.104“Connect theme w/ action (A)” · the whole CONCRETE test in four words: theme stated, action shown.
  3. p.107“Because core substance is all that remains eventually (B)” · his transmission law, written over the Iliad and the Odyssey: time filters everything but core substance.

  5. p.114“(A) MORE fine/complex w/ TIME” · the curse of knowledge given a clock: expertise drifts finer over the years, which is why the expert can’t feel it happening.
  6. p.115“Light of the Cave allegory” · “type of respon-sibility for the engineer (B)” · the machine-as-universal-language pages read through Plato, and the burden assigned where the book puts it. Then the push-back: “(C) Arguably harder to create, then fluidly speak said universal language”.
pp.133–164
credible
  1. p.133“‘Primary Causes’ here (A)” · the belief-sources list, family, experience, faith, authority, met with a philosophy term. The degree keeps showing up in the margins.
  2. pp.134–137“(A) ‘Duh’” · “Duh” · two pages apart, at authorities and antiauthorities. This section reads as confirmation for him, not discovery.
  3. p.139“(A) Vivid doesn’t mean long here though, just descript/ Poignant or key memorable ‘picture it’ highlights (A)” · “(B) The ‘meta’” · the Darth Vader toothbrush pages: vivid is not length, and the details worth keeping are the ones that symbolize the core.
  4. p.142“(A) The resounding Clammor of Beebees in bucket triggered sense connection” · the Beyond War demo: the sound carried the statistic.
  5. p.143“(B) Often, the relationship or ‘What’s in it for me?’ for the audience” · statistics illustrate relationships; the relationship worth illustrating is usually that one. Thirty-six pages later the book hands him its own name for it, WIIFY, and he boxes it.
  6. p.144“(A) A common relative Plane of terms” · the human-scale principle: a statistic works when both quantities sit on one plane the audience already owns.
  7. p.151“(A) WHY one client as [GARBLE: word reads “whale” / “White”, unresolved] is so crucial” · the Sinatra Test, in purple ink from this page on.
  8. p.157“(B) OF course pre built specs are easy, fast, if that is actually the case for a customer (of course) (B)” · testable credentials, try before they buy: the model he already runs, with its honesty condition stated in his own parenthesis.
pp.165–203
emotional
  1. p.167“(A) Emotional, qualitative story drove # donation over just cold hard facts alone (A)” · “(B) make it easy” · the Rokia study headline, and the fix for the drop-in-the-bucket effect in three words.
  2. p.168“Spectrum of pressure (A)” · his frame for the belief-versus-action gap: belief sits on a spectrum and only acts past a threshold.
  3. p.171“A spin on the Familiar (A)” · first spelling struck and rewritten in his own hand. The Truth campaign’s move: keep the teenage emotion, respin its target.
  4. p.173“Our feelings about the term change b/c of this too,” · his addition to semantic stretch; and the association punch line below it carries his double stars, the highest emphasis mark in the whole read.
  5. p.179“True” · at quarter-inch holes, not quarter-inch drill bits; the WIIFY passage boxed beneath it.
  6. p.182“(A) Show & tell makes it easier” · the imagining-yourself-enjoying-it finding, made portable.
  7. p.183“(B) The ‘juggling Spheres’ analogy from my recording on a walk concept here! (B)” · Maslow’s needs pursued simultaneously, matched to a concept from his own walk-tape corpus.
  8. p.189“(A) I wonder how this survey would apply to data center Construct-ion (A)” · the group-interest finding tested against a market he knows.
  9. p.191“(B) Group interest + a lens of need fufilment” · his replacement palette for self-interest-only appeals, fusing the Kinder underline with the Maslow read.
pp.206–237
stories
  1. p.201Two stars, no words · the Three Whys passage double-starred, the batch’s other top-emphasis mark.
  2. p.229“(A) For all, Which is best Simulation, Motivation appeal etc. (?)(A)” · the three story plots interrogated with his answer-this mark: which plot for which payoff.
  3. p.233“This energy (A)(!)” · at Denning’s happier thought, “they’ve stolen my idea. It’s become their idea!” The (!) makes it a directive: let the buyer steal the idea.
  4. p.234“Like a cold call quick hang up (A)” · “(B) Stories that aren’t effective likely target the wrong pain” · arguments invite arguing back; a story that dies picked the wrong pain.
  5. p.237“almost like embedded, [GARBLE: best-effort “Unpacked”] Meaning (A)” · stories embodying most of SUCCESs without effort.
pp.240–260
the close
  1. p.240“Epoch builds vs Personal Writing (A)” · the idea-pride question split across his two lanes: builds can survive the audience mutating the message if the core holds, the personal writing keeps its form.
  2. p.241“(B) Forget to disable the filter (or over use it) & You are screwed” · the core-message filter read as an operating warning: lenses need conscious on/off control.
  3. p.244“(B) The nutshell” · hooked onto the book’s own boxed compression: one or two points, not ten, proverbs that wring decisions out of ambiguity.
  4. sticky advice“Lol true” · at customer communication taken seriously while employee communication isn’t. Folio not printed on the section opener, page number not assumed.
  5. p.256“(A) Tangible [GARBLE: second word best-effort “Membership”, unresolved]” · at the unemployed-college-professor targeting pages.
  6. p.258“How do you buy time to tell it (?)” · at choose-the-story-over-the-moral, his answer-this mark on the practical problem the book leaves open.

Structure is scaffold; every quoted phrase is his, verbatim, spelling as inked (“suprise,” “Clammor,” “fufilment” and kin ship as written). [GARBLE] flags are the decode’s, carried here unresolved, never guessed. The photo drops skip some page runs; nothing from unphotographed pages is summarized.

Where the pen pushed back

The margins agree with this book a lot, and say so with a flat “Duh.” Where they don’t, the objections are craft objections, in his ink.

p.244 · his verdict on the late chapters’ redundancy, beside the More Villains head

“(C) Arguably harder to create, then fluidly speak said universal language”

p.115 · against the find-a-universal-language moral: fluency is the expensive part

“Tough as I typically reject the ‘I’ subjective in writing (A)”

p.181 · the imagining-first-person result grinding against his own voice laws

“(C) most cited, overplayed example for real”

p.33 · the Carville whiteboard, boxed and then called out for example fatigue
The through-line · his ink, down the fore-edge of the strategy pages
“Keeping a GTM book versus building Specs & Shipping (A)”
p.255 · at “if they don’t manifest themselves in action they are inert, irrelevant. They’re academic.”
